Introduction

Podiatry is the branch of medicine pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases or problems of the foot.

A podiatrist is a health care professional trained to diagnose, prevent, treat and manage foot disorders or pain. In order to practice, he/she must complete a degree in Podiatry.

The first podiatry clinic in Singapore was set up in 1993 at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The main reason for setting up a podiatry clinic was to care for the large population of diabetics who needed proper foot care and advice and to reduce the number lower limb amputations amongst diabetics. Today, the role of the podiatrist has evolved to provide a wider range of footcare services.

Manage Your Conditions

  • General foot pain/fatigue is very common in the general population. The most common of which are heel pain, arch pain and pain in the ball of the foot. Pain may be caused by foot deformities such as bunions or hallux valgus, which may commonly be seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or other rheumatological disorders. Other biomechanical abnormalities such as flat feet and high arched feet may also contribute to foot pain. In these cases, patients may benefit from a biomechanical assessment, footwear advice and orthoses therapy.
  • It is common to find callus (thick skin) or corns on the sole of the feet. These are often caused by abnormal pressure and friction over a prolonged period of time. It can arise from wearing unsuitable shoes. Callus may be reduced and corns enucleated by the podiatrist in a sterile environment. Footwear and footcare advice will also be beneficial. As patients with callus and corns tend to have dry skin, the use of moisturising creams will alleviate symptoms.
  • The elderly tend to have thick nails, either caused by fungal infection or is a result of prolonged trauma to the area. Some also cut their nails badly resulting in ingrown toenails. The podiatrist is trained in proper nail cutting techniques to manage those difficult nails. If ingrown nails are not treated properly, there may be recurrent episodes of nail infection and pain.
  • Patients with loss of sensation in both feet, eg. patients with Diabetes or Hansen’s Disease, are susceptible to developing chronic ulcers on the sole of their feet. These ulcers will result in recurrent episodes of infection if not cared for in the proper manner. If the infection is serious, the patient may develop septicaemia, where amputation is inevitable. The patient will need regular wound debridement and woundcare advice. Special insoles will alleviate pressure over the ulcer. Diabetics are also advised to go for annual foot screening and education to prevent development of foot ulcers.
