Chronic non-malignant pain is a common problem in the elderly. Older people may have several sources of pain as they commonly have multiple medical problems. As a result of the pain, they may develop depression, mood disorders and have decreased physical activities. The Elderly Chronic Pain Clinic assesses and treats older persons with chronic non-malignant pain. The clinic is run by Geriatricians with experience in chronic pain management.

It aims to:

Help patients to control pain better through adjustment of medications.
Achieve an appropriate functional goal.
Enhance a patient’s quality of life.

It involves:

Assessing and evaluating patients with chronic pain.
Recommending the appropriate investigations which may include blood investigations and radiological investigations.
Prescribing appropriate medications to treat the chronic pain. We do not perform interventional procedures for pain relief.
Recommending appropriate therapy which includes physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
Appropriate review of patients with further adjustment in treatment if necessary.

Team Work - We work closely with other disciplines and allied healthcare workers who are involved in caring for the patient.
Involvement of family members and other close contacts of patients - They are part of the patient’s resources and through education and counseling, we aim to give them the ability to support the patient.

We provide:

Inpatient Consultancy Service - Inpatient are usually referred to us by other specialist in the hospital. We will assess the patient and recommend the appropriate treatment. The patient may be offered to follow up in the Elderly Chronic Pain Clinic.
Outpatient - We follow up on a selected group of patients in our specialist outpatient clinics. Referrals from other specialists in the hospital and family practitioners may also be seen in this clinic.
