Clinical Department Head
A/Prof Chia Sing Joo
The department of General Surgery has a distinguished history. Since its establishment with the founding of the hospital in the 19th century, it has witnessed numerous firsts in surgical milestones. These include the first open heart surgery, the first urological procedure, and the first perineal prostatectomy, amongst many others.
The department provides a comprehensive spectrum of services, tailored towards accurate diagnosis and management of all surgical conditions in an inpatient as well as outpatient setting. An increasing proportion of procedures is now performed in our ambulatory surgery centre where suitable patients are not required to be admitted to the hospital following their operation and can be discharged on the same day. The following subspecialty services are offered by the team of surgeons in the department - Colon and Rectal Surgery, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Breast and Endocrine Surgery, Hepatico-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Vascular Surgery, Urological Surgery, Thoracic and Plastic Surgery.
