The Urology Unit was formed in 1993 under the aegis of the Department of General Surgery, and has since made quantum leaps to become a leading one-stop center providing comprehensive urological services. These include geriatric urology, neuro-urology, uro-oncology, reconstructive urology, laparoscopic urology, endo-urology, andrology and general urological screening to TTSH itself, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Ang Mo Kio Hospital, and the Johns Hopkins Institute (Singapore). As of 1 Jan 2007, the unit will expand to form the new Department of Urology in Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Our manpower has expanded from 1 consultant with 2 registrars in 1996, to our current strength of 5 consultants, 1 associate consultant and 3 registrars. The Department continues to organize several courses for the Singapore Urological Association, such as the Laparoscopic Urology Workshops and the 4th Advanced Urology Course. It has also become a teaching center for urologists from the regional countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh wishing to understudy the latest techniques in endourology and laparoscopic surgery.
In its seminal stages, the Urology Department began with a close collaboration with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Rehabilitative Medicine to form a Neuro-urology Clinic providing care to patients with voiding disorders. This close multi-disciplinary working relationship continues to mature today, with urologists making weekly rounds at Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital to participate in the care of patients with spinal cord injuries. Formal videourodynamic assessment of such patients nowadays has brought patient care to higher levels at TTSH.
The Urology Department offers a wide spectrum of services including:
Continence Clinic
Endourology & Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy
Uro-oncology
Andrology and Erectile Dysfunction
Neuro-urology & Urodynamics
Hematuria
Laparoscopic Surgery
Male Ageing
Female Urology
Reconstructive Urology
Milestone and Achievements
Significant milestones in our development include the introduction of the Siemens Modularis Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotriptor (ESWL) in 2000; spearheading laparoscopic procedures from 2002 onwards e.g. performing the first laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in Singapore by Dr James Tan in 2003; introduction of the Holmium laser for ureteroscopic lithotripsy and retrograde intrarenal surgery; and our current partnership with the Johns Hopkins Institute (Singapore) in 2004, whose medical and radio-oncologic expertise permits us to provide seamless care to patients with urologic cancers. Other accolades include A/Prof Chia Sing Joo performing the first radical perineal prostatectomy in Singapore in 1996; the Unit opening the first dedicated male erectile dysfunction clinic and library in 1998; and successfully demonstrating ureteroscopic lithotripsy as a viable ambulatory day procedure in 2001.
Despite her numerous achievements, the Urology Department at TTSH strives to maintain its “kampung” spirit of collegiality and happy environment, nurturing its members to strive for greater heights whilst building lasting friendships in the process.
