Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has been awarded the ”Best Workplace Health Practices” at the HRM Awards 2005.
Newly-created for the HRM Awards 2005, the “Best Workplace Health Practices Award” recognises organisations with commendable workplace health promotion (WHP) programmes to promote the health of employees.
Dr Koh Yang Huang, Manager, Workplace Health Promotion, Health Promotion Board: "Tan Tock Seng Hospital has put in place a comprehensive and sustainable workplace health promotion programme for their staff and they were among seven companies awarded the Platinum Singapore HEALTH Award 2004 by the Health Promotion Board. We are pleased that their efforts are also being recognised by the Human Resource Magazine and we congratulate TTSH on winning the inaugural Best Workplace Health Practices Award."
TTSH received the Platinum Singapore HEALTH (Helping Employees Achieve Life-Time Health) Award from the Health Promotion Board in October 2004. The Platinum Award was presented to TTSH for having achieved the Gold Award standard for three consecutive years.
Ms Serene Tan, Director of Human Resource of TTSH, said, “As an organisation that provides quality healthcare to the community, TTSH understands the importance of workplace health to the total well being of our staff. Only when staff are healthy and happy are they able to perform effectively and efficiently. And that translates into better care for our patients.”
To improve organisational productivity and individual quality of life through WHP programmes, TTSH has implemented healthy lifestyle initiatives such as:
- Health Passport – to encourage every TTSH staff to embrace a healthy and more active lifestyle. Staff who participate in healthy lifestyle and family friendly activities organised by the Hospital are awarded Mileage Pointswhich they can accrue and redeem for attractive gifts like sporting goods and spa treats
- Lifestyle Mastery Rewards – part of the Health Passport programme for staff who prefer to exercise outside the Hospital. Staff who achieve the Gold, Silver or Bronze standards during the quarterly fitness assessment will be awarded Mileage Points
- Health Champions – managers and supervisors lead by example to encourage staff’s active participation in healthy lifestyle activities
Since the roll-out of its WHP programmes in 2001, TTSH has seen significant improvements in the well being of its workforce:
- More than 2,500 staff have undergone intervention programmes for weight management, nutrition counselling and exercise prescription
- Significant reduction in cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes levels amongst staff since 2001
- Zero days medical leave recorded for back-related problems with the implementation of TTSH’s Zero-Lift Ergonomics Programme
- 40% increase in gym membership in 2004
- 85% turnout at the Annual Health Screening Exercise in 2004
Ms Tan added, “We are proud that our efforts are recognised today but we will not rest on our laurels. This year, a comprehensive health screening and intervention plan will be introduced for staff including equipping them with chronic disease self-management strategies.”
The HRM Awards 2005 is the biggest and most glamorous night on the HR calendar. The Awards initiative recognises and promotes excellence within the human resources profession in Singapore, and highlights outstanding individuals as well as innovation and achievement from across numerous aspects of human capital management.
