Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Kingdom of Thailand, to Visit Tan Tock Seng Hospital

Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) will be celebrating its Rehabilitation Awareness Day on Friday, 24 April 2009. For the event, TTSH will have the privilege of hosting Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Kingdom of Thailand, who will be in Singapore for a state visit. Her Royal Highness will be accompanied by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, and Mr Peter Chan, Singapore Ambassador to Thailand.

Themed “Making Dreams Happen: Past, Present and Future”, the event will commence with the signing of an MOU between Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Centre and Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre. This will promote a mutual collaboration on Rehabilitation Manpower Development which will be conducted through specific exchange programmes for the benefit of those with disabilities. The collaboration will involve physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, prosthetists, orthotists, social workers and other rehabilitation professionals from both institutions.

The highlight of the event will be the Rehabilitation Awareness Day Exhibition Tour, which will serve as a platform to showcase interactive rehabilitation technology with the added advantage of a hands-on experience for Her Royal Highness and distinguished guests. Highlights of the exhibition are the Lokomat and the Brain Computer Interface (BCI) Technology. Both devices are firsts in Singapore and TTSH for neurorehabilitation, giving hope for those with moderate to severe paralysis of their arms post-stroke.

TTSH is the first in Singapore to have brought in the Lokomat to enhance rehabilitation services and especially to retrain patients with spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury and other neurological disorders. The state-of-the-art robotic device is strapped to the individual’s body and legs and guides them through the ideal walking motion. The Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology is a collaborative research project between Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Agency of Science, Technology & Research and National Neuroscience Institute, which is sponsored by The Enterprise Challenge, Prime Ministers Office. BCI, using a novel way of recruiting latent neural pathways in the injured stroke brain uses attention-detection methods to detect patient’s intent to move his paralysed limb affected by stroke or brain injury.

In conjunction with the event, there will be a Record Making Event by the disabled. The participants will attempt to set a record for "Most Number of 100m Laps Covered on Wheelchairs in One Hour". This record breaking attempt is the first of its kind locally and will be recorded in the Singapore Book of Records.
