Singapore’s three largest medical groups organise first-ever Combined Scientific Meeting (CSM05)

Meeting takes place as the nation celebrates 100 years of medical education

Singapore, 4 Nov 2005 – The three largest medical groups in Singapore – Singapore Health Services (SingHealth), the National Healthcare Group (NHG), and the National University of Singapore (NUS) – have come together at the first Combined Scientific Meeting from 4 to 6 November 2005. Combining resources and expertise, the three groups have organised what could be the largest medical meeting in the region.

Approximately 6,000 local and regional healthcare professionals – physicians, surgeons, dentists, nurses, allied health, academics and research scientists – are expected to attend the three-day meeting which will showcase the best in medical practice, research and education.

“As Singapore celebrates a centenary of medical education this year, it is apt that the parties integral in this milestone event have collaborated to organise the CSM05. The CSM05 is more than just a gathering of health and medical professionals. It serves as a platform to highlight and discuss new challenges and insights in medicine and healthcare that not only affect Singapore but the surrounding region as well, given the extent of inter-dependence and connectivity among neighbouring countries,” said Professor Fock Kwong Ming, Co-Organising President of the CSM05 Organising Committee and a Medical Board Chairman within the SingHealth group.

This year’s theme, “Shaping a New Era in Healthcare” highlights the importance of a holistic review of how healthcare is practiced today and the need to identify trends, either in emerging diseases, new treatment modalities or research breakthroughs.

In line with this theme, topics of critical importance to the region’s healthcare scene and emerging medical research landscape have been chosen. These include Cancer, Heart Disease, Immunology, Imaging, Diabetes and Ageing – amongst others. These topics were chosen for their broad appeal and relevance to the different groups of specialists, academics, research scientists, general practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals who are attending the scientific meeting.

Apart from local health, medical and academic professionals, internationally renowned speakers have also been invited to present and speak at the inaugural CSM05’s plenary and symposium sessions. These include sessions by medical and research professionals from top medical schools.

At the opening ceremony of the Scientific Meeting on Friday 4 Nov, Dr Patrick J. Casey, Senior Vice Dean of Research at the recently established NUS Graduate Medical School will deliver the keynote address “The Physician-Scientist in Singapore: Why? How? When?” at the opening ceremony of the CSM05. In his keynote address, Dr Casey will present how physician-scientists add a necessary element to any great healthcare system or university, and how this career pathway can be best nurtured.

“Singapore’s multi-ethnic population is a microcosm of the region. Together with the various initiatives we have made to position Singapore as the region’s medical and biomedical hub, we are in good stead to organise and promise a scientific meeting which will be exciting and full of compelling content that will be relevant to the local and regional medical community,” added Professor Chee Yam Cheng, Co-Organising President of the CSM05 Organising Committee and Assistant CEO (Clinical) of the National Healthcare Group.

The three day meeting will culminate in the Congress Dinner on 6 Nov 2005. At the dinner, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports & Second Minister for Trade and Industry will deliver his address.

"This inaugural Combined Scientific Meeting provides the right milieu for bringing basic and translational biology shoulder to shoulder with clinical medicine. This is indeed an exciting development considering the tremendous strides Singapore has made in developing the biomedical sector, particularly in areas pertinent to Singapore health such as cancer, infectious disease, immunology, and diabetes. CSM05 provides the optimal platform needed to bridge today's biomedical research with tomorrow's applications in the teaching and practice of medicine both locally and regionally. Bringing together academics, clinicians, and allied health workers from Singapore and internationally during this special centennial year for the University and the Medical Faculty, the future promises a new and bright era in healthcare with the potential to favorably tailor the way we teach and practice medicine today," commented Professor Shazib Pervaiz, Co-Organising President of the CSM05 Organising Committee and Vice-Dean for Faculty of Medicine in NUS.
