About TTSH-NNI Trauma Training Centre
TTSH Trauma is a virtual integration of the services involved in the management of trauma in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), both of which are located in the same complex. TTSH Trauma Service attends to the largest number of trauma patients in Singapore.
The disciplines involved in TTSH-NNI Trauma are:
- Emergency Medicine
- General Surgery
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Neurosurgery
- Critical Care Services and Anaesthesiology
- TTSH Radiology
- NeuroRadiology
- Rehabilitation Medicine
These services are represented in the Trauma Committee, which is responsible for formulating treatment policies and guidelines, and running the various trauma programmes including the trauma training courses.
Central to TTSH-NNI Trauma is the Trauma Unit, which comes under the Department of General Surgery. The Trauma Unit coordinates the multidisciplinary management of polytrauma patients in the centre.
The Trauma Unit is currently run by two full time trauma surgeons, one visiting trauma / military surgeon, a trauma registrar and a trauma coordinator. The Trauma Unit also maintains the Trauma Registry.
Dr Chiu Ming Terk
Dr Chiu is a Senior Consultant Trauma and General Surgeon. He did his trauma fellowship in St Paul - Ramsey Medical Centre, Minnesota, USA. He is currently Director of Trauma in TTSH-NNI Trauma, and Director of the Surgical High Dependency Unit. His special interests are in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, and Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Vijayan Appasamy
Dr. Vijayan Appasamy is a Senior Consultant Trauma and General surgeon. He did his training in trauma and disaster management in the Singapore Armed Forces and did a fellowship in trauma and critical care in Westmeade Hospital, Sydney. He is also a Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine specialist. His clinical and research interests in trauma include high impact, blast and ballistic injuries, end-points in resuscitation and artificial intelligence applications in training and decision making.
LTC (Dr) Chua Wei Chong
Dr Chua is also a regular Army surgeon with the Singapore Armed Forces. He has a strong interest in Trauma Surgery, having completed his General Surgical and Trauma training in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and spending a 6 months stint in Liverpool Hospital, Sydney in 2006 for his Trauma Fellowship. He is currently a visiting Trauma Surgeon at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He is currently the Deputy Chief Army Medical Officer and is a veteran in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. He has a special interest in trauma surgery in austere environments and telemedicine.
Dr Teo Li Tserng
Dr Teo is a General Surgical and Trauma Surgical Registrar. He is currently the Registrar in charge of the Surgical High Dependency Unit for the Division of Surgery in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He has special interests in trauma surgery, critical care, and mass casualty management. In the 2006 Central Java Earthquake, he lead a combined military and civilian surgical team to aid in the disaster.
Ms Karen Go Tsung Shyen
Karen assumed the role of a Trauma Coordinator in Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2003. Graduated in 1995 from the Nanyang Polytechnic of Singapore, Karen has gained wide exposure in her nursing career with experiences in various fields such as Orthopaedic and General Surgery, Medical and Cardiac Care ICU, Emergency Department and Intensive Care Units of various hospitals in Singapore. She also attained the Bachelor in Nursing from the University of Sydney in 2000.
In her current role, she is responsible for the operational, personnel and financial aspects of the trauma program. She also serves as a coordinator for the trauma team in monitoring the progress and outcome of patients from the trauma centre and assist in identifying areas for improvement in the management of trauma.
Ms Yeo Yen Teng
Yen Teng joined the team in 2007 as a trauma coordinator. She graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic in 1997, obtained her Advanced Diploma in Critical Care in 2001 and Bachelor in Nursing from University of Sydney in 2004. With more than 10 years of surgical nursing experiences in surgical, burn and neurosurgical intensive care units, she focused her interest in the care of trauma patients.
In addition to maintaining the trauma registry, she assists in co-ordination of courses and deployment of medical personnel in humanitarian relief missions.
