Dear Partners and Friends,
The coming launch of Healthier SG has seen many health and social care partners and providers across Central Singapore build up their preventive health efforts and expand their networks of care with one another. One key group of participants in this network are the activated residents and volunteers who complement and supplement our community care partners in looking after the more vulnerable residents and supporting their caregivers.
The Bishan neighbourhood is a vibrant and close-knit community with many seniors playing an active role in keeping fit and contributing back to the community. Read more about how St Luke’s Eldercare is working closely with TTSH’s Community Health Team to create and promote programmes that help residents age well and stay healthy within their homes and neighbourhoods. Be inspired by volunteers like Mr Lai, a senior volunteer with RSVP Singapore The Organisation of Senior Volunteers who has been volunteering regularly at St Luke’s Elder Care and Lions Home after his retirement from the police force, and Mdm Lim who volunteers at the Caregivers Alliance even as she juggles her caregiving and work responsibilities.
An unavoidable aspect of ageing is the end of life, and everyone hopes to leave well. Lions Home has been part of Project CARE in collaboration with TTSH’s palliative care team, and together they have been enabling residents to have dignified final days for more than ten years.
May these stories inspire us to do more for the communities that we live in.

A Close Community to Care for One Another
On the western side of Central zone, living alongside the 86,000 residents of Bishan are residents of a different variety.
Keeping Fit and Healthy in Bishan
The SLEC Fit Agers programme ultimately aims to enable residents to achieve a self-sustained change in health behaviours through education and empowerment, and in turn build a community that “Takes Control, Lives Well, and Ages Strong”!
Senior Volunteers Enrich Lives and Strengthen Social Compact
RSVP Singapore is the nation’s Centre of Excellence for Senior Volunteerism. Many seniors like Mr Lai join RSVP for meaningful volunteering journeys as they stay active, age well, gain new skills and friends, and are an asset to our social compact.
Empowering Hidden Heroes
Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL) is the only non-profit organisation in Singapore dedicated to empowering mental health caregivers through education and support.
Living and Leaving Well at (Lions) Home
Nestled in the heart of the Bishan neighbourhood is a five-storey building that is home to some 230 residents at different stages of their lives. Amongst other community services, Lions Home for the Elders provides care for Nursing Home residents requiring long-term care who may choose to pass away in the home.
