Cardiac Imaging (Nuclear & CT) Fellowship

The Nuclear Cardiology laboratory at TTSH is an extremely busy service, performing over 2000 studies annually using a top-of-the-line solid state CZT detector camera that can perform high quality studies at rapid speed. Imaging is performed for a variety of indications including chest pain assessment, efficacy of therapy in established disease, myocardial viability, and functional significance of known coronary artery disease.

The Cardiac CT laboratory at TTSH boasts the presence of a state-of-the-art dual source 256 slice scanner capable of delivering high quality images at incredibly low (< 1mSv) doses. We perform close to 400 studies annually for a variety of indications including chest pain, screening for atherosclerosis, stent and graft patency, anomalous coronary arteries, serial follow up of coronary aneurysms, assessment of total occlusions prior to attempted percutaneous coronary intervention.

This is a one year fellowship program accredited by the Singapore Medical Council and is structured to involve trainees in imaging studies in a beginning-to-end fashion, i.e., trainees will be involved in:

  • reviewing patients prior to testing
  • conducting the test (exercise or pharmacological stress test or cardiac CT)
  • image interpretation
  • drafting the initial report
  • formal image interpretation with experienced faculty on a 1:1 basis before report finalization
  • active involvement in decision making for subsequent therapy
  • participate in research and present abstracts on national and international meetings
  • A trainee can expect to develop ACC/AHA Level II-III proficiency in Nuclear Cardiology and ACC/AHA Level III proficiency in cardiac CT interpretation. This will make him/her eligible to sit for the U.S. basedCertification Board in Nuclear CardiologyandCertification Board in Cardiac Computed Tomographyexaminations and become “board certified” in each respective area.

  • Candidates must have a medical degree and have completed an accredited cardiology training program in their respective country/institution and fulfil Singapore Medical Council registration requirements.
  • Preference (though not necessary) will be given to candidates who have demonstrated an interest in research and have successfully passed an accredited exit examination in cardiology.
  • Long term practicing cardiologists without "formal" certification of training may also apply and will be evaluated on a case-to-case basis.
  • Basic experience in stress testing
  • Only a basic knowledge of nuclear cardiology and/or cardiac CT is assumed

Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

The TTSH Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is a one-year training program, accredited by Singapore Medical Council. It provides a broad-based learning experience in all aspects of interventional cardiology with emphasis on acute coronary syndrome. Trainees receive high-quality education in patient evaluation, technical performance of simple and complex interventional procedures and post-procedural management. Candidates are strongly encouraged to participate in ongoing clinical research and audit programmes. Experienced interventional trainees also have the opportunity to apply for an accelerated programme of 6 months or above where the emphasis will be on transradial intervention and primary angioplasty.

The TTSH Invasive Catheterization Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility with 3 rooms (including one hybrid lab) dedicated to interventional cardiology. Over 2,500 diagnostic procedures and 1,100 percutaneous coronary interventions are performed annually. Routine procedures include:

  • Intracoronary stenting
  • Saphenous vein graft intervention
  • Primary and rescue PCI for acute myocardial infarction
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump placement
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Fractional flow reserve
  • Angiojet
  • Thrombectomy for massive pulmonary embolism
  • Drainage of pericardial effusion

Admission Criteria

  • Fulfill Singapore Medical Council requirement for temporary registration paying particular attention to the English language proficiency listed in the website.
  • MMed, MRCP or its equivalent.
  • Completed accredited cardiology training program.
  • Skilled competency in invasive diagnostic cardiac procedures. The fellow should have spent 1 year actively performing diagnostic procedures. Candidates will be expected to participate in an interventional cardiology programme in their home country upon completion of the programme.
