Orthopaedic Surgery (Sports Medicine and Surgery)

Introduction

The Sports Medicine & Surgery Service provides diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for individuals with sports-related injuries of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Our Orthopaedic Sports Surgeons are highly trained in both traditional open surgery as well as minimally-invasive arthroscopic surgery.

We work closely with sports physicians and physiotherapists to restore our patients to health to allow them to return to their sports.

The majority of our workload involves arthroscopic shoulder & knee surgeries. Increasingly, we are also performing hip and elbow arthroscopies to treat hip and elbow conditions, respectively. Our service also performs shoulder and elbow replacements for arthritis of the shoulders and elbows.

Common surgeries performed at our centre include:

  • Arthroscopic shoulder stabilization for dislocation and instability
  • Arthroscopic SLAP repair
  • Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair for traumatic and degenerative tears
  • Arthroscopic capsular release for recalcitrant frozen shoulder
  • Radiofrequency treatment for recalcitrant tennis or golfer’s elbows
  • Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy or repair of torn meniscus in the knees
  • Arthroscopic and open ligament reconstruction for ligament tears of the knees (ACL, PCL, MCL, PLC and multi-ligamentous injuries)
  • Cartilage stimulation or resurfacing procedures for cartilage injuries of the knees

The Clinical Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Surgery offers prospective fellows the opportunity to learn the latest techniques of arthroscopic and open sports surgery, principally of the shoulders and knees.

Fellows will be required to actively participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, operation lists, department teaching sessions and journal clubs.

Fellows are also expected to be involved in clinical research and generate at least one published article in a peer-reviewed journal.
