Dr Yew Kuo Chao is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and currently serves as the Vice Executive Chairman of the National Foundation of Digestive Diseases. He obtained his basic medical degree from the University of Malaya, followed by Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP, UK) and Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine in 2009. He completed his specialist training in Gastroenterology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2013. As part of his commitment to advancing liver care, Dr Yew was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) fellowship to train in hepatocellular carcinoma and liver diseases at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan.

Dr Yew has made commendable contributions in the fight against Hepatitis C elimination in Singapore. He served as an invited speaker and panelist for the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination, a key initiative by The Task Force for Global Health. As a member of the Singapore Hepatitis C Elimination Committee, and in collaboration with community partners such as halfway houses, he spearheaded the Educate, Test, Treat! (ETT) Programme, targeting at-risk populations, in particular, individuals with a history of intravenous drug use, to raise awareness, facilitate early diagnosis, and ensure access to treatment for Hepatitis C virus infection.

He is actively involved in research and development in artificial intelligence and medical device innovation, aimed at improving outcomes in gastrointestinal and liver health. His clinical and academic focus have since centered on liver disease prevention, early detection, and innovation in therapeutic strategies. Dr Yew’s research interests include early gastrointestinal and liver cancer detection, nutrition and metabolic liver diseases such as hepatic steatosis and steatohepatitis, acute and chronic liver failure, and regenerative medicine. His projects involve multi-institutional and cross-disciplinary collaborations with both local and international partners, integrating clinical medicine with technology and data science.

In 2024/25, he was awarded the Singapore Ministry of Health’s National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Clinician Scientist New Investigator Grant (CNIG24jul-0013) for his project titled “AI-Enhanced Smart Toilet System for Optimal Bowel Preparation in Colonoscopy Patients.” This innovation seeks to enhance the quality of bowel preparation before colonoscopy, aiming to improve adenoma detection rates, streamline clinical workflows, and reduce the need for repeated procedures— ultimately improving patient and nursing experiences.

Through his diverse work, Dr Yew continues to champion healthcare transformation by merging community engagement, clinical excellence, and forward-looking technologies. His ongoing efforts aim to improve individual patient care and inform broader strategies in disease prevention, screening, and therapeutic innovation across the spectrum of digestive and liver health.
