A single diagnosis can take everything away.
For some patients at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), illness is not only a battle for health but also a struggle to afford basic medical needs. With little savings and limited family support, the cost of essential items such as wheelchairs, interim dialysis, breathing equipment and transport can quickly become overwhelming. Without timely help, recovery may be delayed, affecting dignity, independence and quality of life.
Gary knows this struggle all too well. He was admitted for dengue, but further tests revealed end-stage renal failure. Overnight, his life changed. Dialysis became a necessity, alongside multiple medications for his heart, lungs, and diabetes - just to stay alive. Once a dedicated customer service officer and passionate home cook, Gary can no longer work or enjoy the things he loved. As medical bills mounted, he relied on friends for financial support. “Friends can help, but they can’t help forever,” he shared.
With the help of a Medical Social Worker, Gary received assistance from TTSH Community Fund, which covered his interim dialysis and transport, easing his financial burden and allowing him to focus on his treatment. This campaign supports the General Needy Patients Fund, helping patients like Gary – by funding essential medical equipment, interim dialysis, and post-discharge needs - they can recover safely without delays.
Last year, TTSH Community Fund supported over 2,200 patients, disbursing more than $2 million in aid.
