Wondering how to feed your loved one safely? What to do if he/she is constantly holding food/water in his/her mouth (as sometimes observed in elderly with dementia)? Who to consult if he/she is coughing/choking on food/water?

 

Do

  • Sit upright to eat
  • Feed slowly
  • Feed the next spoon of food/water only after the person swallows the first spoon of food/water

Do Not

  • Talk and eat at the same time
  • Rush through the meals and drinks
  • Distract the person during meals
  • Feed if the person is drowsy / Sleeping / coughing and choking

 

If the person is holding food / water in mouth, try:

  • Showing the next spoon of food/water visually
  • Asking the person to swallow verbally

If the person is coughing / choking on food/water:

  • Check if the food and fluids are suitable for person
  • Inform Doctor to get Speech Therapist (ST) referral/take note of coughing and inform ST in follow up session
