Rehabilitation for Older Adults

Synopsis
Rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in restoring and maintaining functional independence in older adults, and addressing the needs of those at risk of decline due to geriatric syndromes and common effects related to ageing. Essential to geriatric rehabilitation is:
(i) a sound understanding of common conditions (such as falls, frailty and sarcopenia) and their impact on the older adult, (ii) comprehensive assessment of function and related impairments, as well as (iii) targeted interventions delivered in a person-centred approach.
This course aims to equip participants with essential skills and
knowledge to provide and/or support older adults in quality and meaningful rehabilitation, aligning with latest evidence and best practices in geriatric care.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
1) describe changes related to ageing, geriatric syndromes and their impact on health and function.
2) understand comprehensive geriatric assessment and its components.
3) select and perform appropriate functional outcome measures.
4) understand the International Classification of Function, Handicap and Disability (ICF) framework and its use in care planning and goal setting.
5) describe and apply person-centred goal setting.
6) understand key principles and components of exercise and physical activity for older adults.
7) appreciate concepts surrounding motivation for exercise and physical activity.
