Description

CARERS (Coaching, Advocacy, Respite, Education, Relationship, Simulation) Program is a program adapted from Mount Sinai Hospital, Canada. It uses a unique training approach focusing on practical skills based tools and emotional supports needed to provide care for family members with dementia. Sessions are conducted in small groups and allows for opportunity to meet and support other caregivers of persons with dementia.

Objectives

Caregivers will:

  • Develop more effective problem solving skills
  • Develop practical skills to improve communication and manage dementia related behaviours
  • Learn new skills by practicing them with the help of standardized patients who are professional actors trained to work with caregivers to simulate specific challenging situations encountered at home
  • Receive guidance and coaching by expert clinical staff through individualized role playing scenarios in order to learn new and more successful ways to cope with common caregiving dilemmas
  • Have the chance to process their emotional reactions to caregiving
  • Develop an enhanced sense of capability, feel less isolated and can continue to provide care in the community.

Description

TEACH (Training Education, and Assistance for Caregiving at Home) Program is an interactive program adapted from Mount Sinai Hospital, Canada. It is a 4-session group program that incorporates skills building and emotional support, tailored to family caregivers. Each session covers a theme central to caregiving:

  1. Self-Care
  2. Navigating the System
  3. The Changing Relationship
  4. Future Planning

Sessions are conducted in small groups and allows for opportunity to meet and support other family caregivers.

Objectives

Caregivers will:

  • Understand the current and potential challenges that may arise from caregiving and how to manage them
  • Know the available community resources and learn how to engage these resources
  • Develop an enhanced sense of capability, feel less isolated and can continue to provide care in the community

  • 4-weekly session, 90 minutes each

Description

A group session that gather and educate family caregivers of persons with dementia on the disease, its manifestations and how to approach challenging behaviours.

Objectives

Caregivers will:

  • Understand basic knowledge on dementia and dementia related behaviours
  • Understand practical approaches in managing dementia-related behaviours
  • Identify different strategies used to manage dementia-related behaviour

Caregiving is a challenging journey. Learning how to cope with the challenges is important to improve caregiver's confidence and self-efficacy, consequently improving their ability to sustain caregiving in the long run. This program teaches caregivers a step-by-step approach to addressing problems they face or may face in the future.

  • Have an opportunity to apply the approach to their challenges
  • Feel more supported from the sharing with other caregivers

Description

Caregivers may often be consumed with the role of caregiving that they neglect their own needs and well-being. This program introduces caregivers to the importance of self-care, understanding the consequence of not practising self-care and provides strategies on how they can attain self-care admist their caregiving.

Objectives

Caregivers will:

  • Be aware of the importance of self-care
  • Recognize and understand caregiver burnout
  • Identify self-care strategies
  • Be able to validate their feelings and stress through meditation and art therapy
  • Be able to navigate community resources to enable self-care

Description

This program provides caregivers with an overview of caregiving and practical tips to manage their day to day caregiving tasks. The program will cover content such as what to know about your care recipient, where to seek help, how to organize and manage care recipient's needs, how to set up a care environment at home and highlight the importance of self-care for caregivers.

  • Be aware of the caregiving journey
  • Be introduced to practical tips that can help with caregiving
  • Recognize the importance of self-care
