Orthopaedic Nurse Clinicians provide care to patients with actual or potential disruptions of the Musculoskeletal System in both acute inpatient and outpatient settings.

The musculoskeletal system can be affected by degenerative, traumatic, inflammatory, neuromuscular, congenital, metabolic, and oncologic disorders throughout the lifespan. Our Nurse Clinicians collaborate with the orthopaedic physician and other health care providers to promote patient independence, optimum mobility, comfort and we​llness.

Our Services

Adult Reconstructive Surgery

  • Total Knee/Total Hip Replacement (TKR/THR) Post-op education
  • Follow up call after discharge for patients discharged home
  • Tele-consult for internal/external parties on Total Knee/Total Hip Replacement (TKR/THR)
  • Early Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) – Total Knee/Total Hip Replacement (TKR/THR) teaching to nurses (inpatient/outpatient/community hospital/community partners)

Casting and Immobilisation

  • Splinting and casting services (i.e., emergency splint, resting splints, full cast, bracing and focus rigidity cast) and care of the patient who experience musculoskeletal injuries
  • Traction application (i.e., Skin, Skeletal, Fixed and Sliding Traction) for trauma and non-trauma musculoskeletal injuries
  • Patient education and counselling to assist patient to prevent injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system

Foot and Ankle Surgery

  • Wound management
    • Manage complex wound including use of specialized dressing equipment e.g., negative pressure wound therapy dressing
    • Perform bedside debridement
    • Perform circular fixator wound care
  • Lower Limb Reconstruction management
    • Pre and post lower limb reconstruction counselling
    • Education on care of fixator and performing distraction at home
    • Adjust and distract a circular fixator for gradual deformity correction or limb lengthening treatment
  • ·​​ Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
    • Perform ESWT
    • Education on appropriate physical exercises
    • Use of appropriate footwear
  • Education and Counseling on Diabetic Foot disease
    • Educate on good foot care
    • Education on appropriate use of footwear
    • Modify risk factors such as Smoking, Diabetic control, Obesity, and Physical activity
  • Removal of K Wire

Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) / Osteoporosis

  • Counselling of patients with Osteoporosis
  • Disease process and progression
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Bone health education- behavior and lifestyle modification
  • Fall prevention
  • Monitor patients' compliance to medications and side effects
  • Identify high risk patients for further evaluation by Geriatricians in the Fall & Balance clinic / Ophthalmologists

Hand Reconstructive Microsurgery (HRM)

  • Management of distal radius fragility fractures that are treated non-surgically
  • Osteoporosis screening and counselling
  • Wound management
  • Complex Microsurgery wounds – post Split Skin Graft / Flap

Spine Surgery

  • Pre-op counselling and Post-op education to patients undergoing ERAS Spine Surgery
  • Post-operative wound inspection, wound assessment, dressing change and wound care advice
  • Management of surgical drains
  • Management of Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures
