Trauma Surgery is a specialised field dedicated to the urgent and complex care of patients who have sustained severe injuries from traumatic events such as motor vehicle accidents, falls or interpersonal violence etc. The Trauma Care Nurse Clinician works closely with Trauma Surgeons, coordinating the delivery of comprehensive care to acutely injured patients, ensuring both efficiency and quality.

Our Services

  • Assessing and prioritising the treatment of trauma patients in the Emergency Department and inpatient wards
  • Evaluating acutely injured patients for acute stress reactions or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and initiating referrals to the Trauma Psychologist when necessary
  • Participating in the management of pre and post-operative trauma patients
  • Assessing patients' suitability and readiness for rehabilitation, in collaboration with the Trauma Rehabilitation Physician and Allied Health professionals
  • Reviewing patients with rib fractures in the outpatient setting alongside General Surgery Trauma Consultants
  • Assisting the surgical team with various bedside procedures, including (but not limited to):
    • Emergency airway procedures
    • Chest tube insertion
    • Wound care and suturing
    • Surgical wound management
    • Management and troubleshooting of surgical drains
  • Educating trauma patients on:
    • Post-operative care initiatives to prevent and minimise complications
    • Proper home care post-discharge, with tailored discharge advice
    • Pain control and pulmonary hygiene, particularly for patients with rib fractures, both during hospitalization and after discharge

Educational Initiatives

The Trauma Nurse Clinician also plays an integral role in initiating and supporting trauma-related education and training programs to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals.​
