Introduction on Asthma Care Services

Chronic diseases such as asthma often have intermittent symptoms but require long-term treatment. Treating asthma is not usually hard, but it can be complex, requiring a fine balance of:

  • Understanding of the disease
  • Understanding of role of different drugs and the need for continued prophylaxis
  • Understanding of techniques of inhaler use
  • Understanding the role of allergens and triggers and how to avoid them
  • Understanding of the Asthma Action Plan and how to use it
  • Recognition of asthma symptoms

It is important that the patient and family have a good understanding of the above to help keep asthma under control. The asthma nurse clinician maintains partnership with patients and their physician to help provide information, counselling and support to help them manage their asthma.
